Types of Substance Abuse Programs: Making Your Choice

Table of Contents

Substance abuse programs are offered in a number of different options. Learn about the types of substance abuse programs and find our which may be the best option for you.

Inpatient Substance Abuse Programs

Inpatient substance abuse programs are typically recommended for most clients of substance abuse and addiction. This is because they are strict programs where clients stay at the program facilities 24/7 for the duration of treatment (not including any special trips such as the grocery store or an offsite support group meeting). Clients are thus free to work on getting better without having to also handle the myriad of additional triggers that exist in the outside world such as stress, people who serve as triggers, enablers, places of former substance use, advertisements and media portraying or glamorizing substance abuse and so on.

Partial Hospitalization Substance Abuse Programs

Partial hospitalization substance abuse programs are similar to inpatient programs in treatment and care procedures and methods. However, clients of partial hospitalization programs sleep at home each night and do not spend all of their time at the program facility. Clients spend a specified amount of time each day at the program center for treatment, and typically spend more time at the treatment facility than in the outside world for the duration of the program.

Outpatient Substance Abuse Programs

Outpatient substance abuse programs are only recommended for very specific clients of substance abuse and addiction. This is because clients sleep at home and spend a significant amount of time each day in the world outside of the program center. Outpatient clients are able to attend work or school as well as spend a significant amount of time with their family; however, they are also faced with a number of challenges in the form of several triggers. Some potential triggers outpatient clients must avoid are stress, boredom, friends who continue to use and sources for substances. Many times the only clients that are recommended for such substance abuse programs are clients who have already been through a more intense program, clients who have only recently developed addictions and other such specific cases.
