Intensive Outpatient Treatment for Mental Health

Intensive Outpatient Treatment in Fort Lauderdale, Florida

The intensive outpatient treatment at Destination Hope was established more than a decade ago and has earned a stellar reputation for quality of care. Our Intensive Outpatient Program (IOP) for mental health goes far beyond the ordinary and typical with special attention paid to preparing clients to re-enter the world with the tools they need to manage their mental illnesses.

The goal of our intensive outpatient treatment for mental health here is more than simply helping to stabilize and settle. We want to see every person we help continue to progress and to thrive long after they complete their treatment at Destination Hope.

IOPs are mainly used to address substance abuse disorders, they’ve also been proven effective for treating mental health disorders, especially with standard outpatient programs that are not supportive enough for a particular situation.

Outpatient treatment allows patients to return to a supportive living environment every night, or even home in some cases, unlike inpatient treatment, where patients live at the rehab center while undergoing treatment. IOPs are structured treatment programs that follow structured schedule and routine. These programs help you build life skills.

How IOP Applies To Mental Health Treatment

IOT programs can be a vital step in addressing mental health disorders. Some of the reasons treatment providers may recommend an intensive care program include the following:

  • prevention method for higher levels of can or medical supervision
  • decreasing the risk of worsening mental health disorders
  • assisting someone transitioning out of inpatient therapy
  • helping someone to learn to recognize and manage their symptoms
  • aid in developing coping strategies

IOP may not always be the best form of treatment for every person. People who can benefit most from intensive outpatient programs are those who:

  • can easily express their thoughts and feelings verbally
  • are motivated to participate in their treatment program
  • are motivated to enter recovery
  • will participate in group therapy sessions
  • can learn and apply skills they discover in treatment
  • don’t need to detox from substances
  • don’t need 24/7 medical assistance

Intensive Outpatient Vs. Partial Hospitalization Programs

IOP and PHP are both considered structured outpatient care. While they are similar, they aren’t the same thing.

Typical intensive outpatient programs consist of an average of six to nine hours of total treatment time a week; PHP is more like 20 hours weekly.

Anyone in a PHP treatment will also be supervised for most of their treatment and usually spend their nights at home. However, it is possible to spend the night at a treatment facility during PHPs.

PHP was initially intended to treat mental health conditions, but treatment centers have expanded to include substance abuse treatment as well. However, most people enroll in PHP after completing an inpatient treatment program

Some people may progress to an IOP after completing their PHP. Generally, this happens when someone has manageable symptoms but continues to require some support as they progress in their healing.

What To Expect At A Mental Health IOP

Intensive outpatient care can run three to five days weekly, between two and five hours daily. The core services offered at most mental health intensive outpatient programs include:

  • various group therapies
  • education about mental conditions and how to effectively manage them without substances
  • medication management
  • psychiatric care

Some drug rehab centers, like Destination Hope, also provide evidence-based treatment services like art therapy, yoga, music therapy, and other alternative treatments that complement the core program.

Intensive Outpatient Programs Frequently Asked Questions (FAQ)

Q: How long does intensive outpatient treatment last?
A: Generally, intensive outpatient treatment lasts eight to 12 weeks. But your time in intensive outpatient treatment depends on your unique mental health situation.

Q: Is intensive care treatment covered by insurance?
A: Yes, most health insurance plans provide coverage for intensive outpatient programs. But your individual coverage will depend on the exact plan you’re enrolled in. It’s also worth noting that not all insurances have an IOP benefit.

Q: Can I rehab my mental illness at home?
A: It’s challenging to recover from mental illness at home because this usually means trying to get better alone. Most mental health disorders will worsen when you’re isolated. Professional care is a vital part of the process and can provide access to tools and resources you may not have access to from your house.
