What Not To Do Before Entering a Substance Abuse Program

Table of Contents

Substance abuse program clients can sometimes make poor choices prior to beginning treatment. Here are five things not to do before entering your substance abuse program!

1. Go on a Bender.

You’ve decided you will go to a substance abuse program so you want to go ahead and have one last time of drinking heavily or abusing drugs. This is not wise. You are going to treatment because you are aware that you have a problem with substances and you are aware of how dangerous and unhealthy it is to abuse substances. It’s time to start thinking in the mindset of recovery by being proactive about taking care of yourself and being truly committed to positive results.

2. Disappear So No One Can Find You.

Don’t run away. You would only be hurting yourself. Going to a substance abuse program can transform your life for the better to a place of greater health, stability and productivity.

3. Try To Pack a Stash of Drugs or Alcohol.

Do not attempt to find a way to smuggle contraband into your rehabilitation center. You cannot have a successful recovery by going through the program while continuing to use alcohol and/or drugs. Smuggling substances also puts the recovery of your client peers at risk.

4. Arrange to Have Someone Meet You Afterwards with Drugs.

Leaving a substance abuse program and going straight into the arms of substance abuse afterwards defeats the purpose. Remember the benefits of recovery and how much better your life can be without drugs.

5. Change Your Mind about Going to a Substance Abuse Program.

Don’t change your mind about going to the program. Think about the long list of benefits of recovery and the dangers and consequences of substance abuse and addiction. You deserve to be able to lead a healthier and more positive life.

The Substance Abuse Program Process

You may not be aware of the way your substance abuse program works. You can work on entering the recovery process by participating in various treatment methods. The main treatment method is psychotherapy, which you can engage in by means of psychotherapy sessions such as one-on-one therapy, group therapy and family therapy. Lifestyle counseling and stress management can help you shape your life for greater health and wellness through such initiatives as exercise, nutrition, meditation and others. You also attend support group meetings to give and receive valuable recovery support and work on avoiding harmful substance use triggers with your personalized relapse prevention strategies.
