Ecstasy
Ecstasy is a well-known party drug that produces a pleasurable and addictive high as the drug delivers its strong effects. The media often portrays ecstasy, a form of MDMA, as a drug that can casually be taken at clubs and social events. However, this is a misconception and some users who first abuse the drug, become physically dependent, and slowly become addicted to it.
What is Ecstasy?
Ecstasy is a synthetic (man-made) drug often in pill or capsule form and can will contain a mix of various drugs. This makes it extremely dangerous to take even once, as every pill can differ – even those made in the same “batch.”
Also known as MDMA or Molly, is a popular club drug because of its stimulant properties. It alters mood and perception and can be very addictive, although to a lesser degree than cocaine. It can cause severe dehydration, liver and heart failure, and even death. It can also promote trust and closeness, which may lead to dangerous sexual activity while under the influence¹.
It is important to remember that ecstasy is simply a marketing term for similiar drugs that may, in fact, contain very little MDMA. While MDMA alone can produce harmful effects, what is called ecstasy today often contains a wide mixture of substances – including LSD, cocaine, heroin, amphetamine, methamphetamine, and even rat poison.
Ecstasy restricts the body’s natural alarm signals. As a result, users often go beyond their physical capabilities without realizing they are doing so. For instance, a person on ecstasy may not realize they have drank liters of water and drink themselves to death. A user may not realize he has become overheated, and faint or experience a heatstroke. This is particularly dangerous if in a club setting where the body may already be overexerting itself.
