My Teenager Needs a Substance Abuse Program: What Can I Do?

Table of Contents

Substance abuse program options are available to help your teen begin the journey of recovery. Help support the successful recovery of your son or daughter with honesty, trust, tact and sensitivity.

Speaking to Your Teen about a Substance Abuse Program

Once you understand and accept that your teen has a substance abuse problem, it is only the beginning of the recovery journey. Your child may not realize he has a problem or he may not be willing to admit to any substance use at all. The goal is to help them through this process. Overcoming denial and admitting you have a problem is the very first step of the substance abuse recovery program.

It’s important that your teen comes to this acceptance of the problem in order to gain the best results possible from the substance abuse program. While the program utilizes effective, tried-and-true methods of care, they are not sufficient on their own. The substance abuse program also requires your teen’s hard work, dedication and commitment to overcoming substance abuse in order to be a success.

Supporting Your Child’s Recovery Efforts

Before you speak with your child, please be aware that confrontation, blaming, shaming, producing guilt or using any other such tactics will be counterproductive. The best way to help your child get recovered is to be honest, be trustworthy, be sensitive to his or her needs and to use tact. Your child should feel comfortable looking to you for support and guidance. He cannot receive full support from you if he feels he cannot speak about his needs, hopes and fears. Be sensitive to these needs and act accordingly. It can make a remarkable difference in the odds for your child’s recovery success. This is something you will learn more about through such means as family therapy at the substance abuse program.

Being supportive is the goal; however, do not engage in enabling. You may feel that allowing your child to continue to engage in substance use or other such risky associated behaviors is okay because you don’t have the heart to make them feel bad. The truth is that substance abuse and addiction is dangerous and will jeopardize the health, safety, well being and future of your child. Your teen may feel some discomfort in the beginning of the recovery journey as denial is faced, but the recovery process will only help your child to feel better and gain deep, personal insights, improved health and greater productivity.
