Heroin addiction appears to be a factor in the sudden death of Oscar-winning actor Philip Seymour Hoffman. The 46-year-old father of three was found in a Manhattan apartment with a needle still embedded in his arm. The cause of death has yet to be officially determined, but the circumstances suggest that it was a heroin overdose.
Philip Seymour Hoffman’s History With Heroin Addiction
Hoffman was known for his work in films such as Capote, for which he won a best actor Oscar in 2006. His acting career started in 1991 with a role in the television series Law & Order. The following year he appeared in four films and continued to establish a successful career. As is unfortunately the case for many people in Hollywood, he had battled addiction in his past.
According to an interview with 60 Minutes, Hoffman first entered rehab when he was 22 years old. At that time, it wasn’t just heroin addiction he struggled with, but an addiction to alcohol and multiple drugs. Fearing for his life, Hoffman underwent treatment for addiction and remained sober for 23 years. After a relapse in 2013, Hoffman once again sought treatment.
Hoffman’s relapse started with prescription pills and snowballed into heroin abuse. After a week of relapsing with heroin, he checked himself into a detoxification facility on the East Coast. Hoffman spent 10 days in treatment and immediately returned to work following his discharge. At the time he credited his support network for helping him get back on track with his recovery. Sadly, his recent relapse into heroin addiction was too serious to overcome.
Why Did Hoffman Relapse?
