Ten Statements That Deny Your Drug Abuse and Addiction Problem

Table of Contents

Drug abuse and addiction problems can be devastating to an individual and a family.  Unfortunately, many people don’t recognize they have a problem with substance abuse until they’ve hit the bottom or run into trouble with the law or loved ones.  So, when do you know that drug abuse and addiction are taking over your life? If you find yourself saying or believing one of the following statements, it may be time to seek treatment.

10 Myths of Drug Abuse and Addiction

1. I can stop using it anytime I want.
Maybe you can stop, but you make no efforts to because you do not want to.

2. My drug use is a personal matter. It does not affect anyone else.
Drug abuse and addiction affects everyone around the user. Partners are repeatedly turned away and kept in the dark. Children stand behind the user’s drug of choice.

3. I only use on the weekends. I only drink wine or beer, not liquor. I never do it in front of the kids.
The frequency of use is not the only qualification of addiction. The effects of the use are often more telling of a problem. If your use affects your work or home life, it may be time to seek help.
4. I never miss a day of work.
Many people with drug abuse and addiction problems are extremely high-functioning. They never miss work. In fact, they often excel at their jobs.

5. I am under a lot of stress. Once my life calms down, I will quit using.
There will always be reasons to use. Many people have a future date in mind when they will stop. Common excuses include “when money is not so tight” and “once I get that promotion at work.”
6. The doctor prescribed it, so it must be fine.
Not all doctors prescribe conservatively. Every patient is not honest. Some people see several doctors. Just because a medication is prescribed does not mean it cannot be used for drug abuse and addiction.

7. Life without drug and alcohol is boring.
Many people who use substances are chasing the pleasures they experienced during their first few times of use.

8. Substance use contributes to my special talent or creativity.
Drug abuse and addiction takes the user’s focus from their talent or creativity. It does not enhance it.

9. Just because other people become addicted to my substance of choice, does not mean I will. I am a special case.
When we play with fire, we often get burned.

10. Every normal person uses drugs or alcohol.
People live happy, normal lives without using.
