Substance Abuse Prevention Starts at Home

Table of Contents

Substance abuse prevention is not restricted to treatment facilities. If your loved one is a woman in recovery, facing the battle against substance abuse, you can be a part of substance abuse prevention. Consider yourself and your family a team. You are the main support system, someone that can be relied upon in challenging times. Be prepared, be compassionate, and always remember to act out of love.

Substance Abuse Prevention at Home

Substance abuse prevention begins with you at home
Facing substance abuse can be a hard road to travel. By committing to recovery, the person you care about has already turned a corner. Admitting that there is a problem and getting help to overcome addiction is the first step. However, you must continue the efforts at home. Your loved one may benefit from a secure, safe haven where she can avoid stumbling into relapse. This is the time when you and your family can step up to give your loved one everything that she needs in order to be successful in her recovery.

Remove any chances for temptation
It’s time to clean house. In order for substance abuse prevention to be successful, the sources of temptation need to be removed. There should be nothing in the house that could lead a woman in recovery down the wrong road. Clear out the liquor cabinet, get rid of the beer, and check the medicine cabinet. It may mean a time of sacrifice for others in the family, but it could ultimately help the woman that you love.

Have patience
You might need to have more patience than you ever have before. Overcoming substance abuse takes a physical and emotional toll on a woman in recovery. There are likely to be good days and bad days. Be understanding and continue to be a source of support. Keep the doors to communication open. Listen and be compassionate. Your caring can go a long way and have a positive impact.

Do things you enjoy
Finding other outlets can be key in substance abuse prevention. Pick up a hobby together, get active, go on day trips. Keep your loved one occupied and don’t leave her with too much idle time on her hands. Find healthy substitutes to relieve stress. Do things together and don’t leave your loved one alone. It may help her to know that she is not facing this journey by herself. With a loving home to embrace her, she has improved chances of success.
