From March 28 through March 31, 2016, Destination Hope will be at the 2016 National Rx Drug Abuse & Heroin Summit in downtown Atlanta at the Westin Peachtree Plaza hotel.

Federal, state and local professionals will gather to discuss drug abuse and misuse, as well as changes in the field. The event is the largest collaboration of professionals in the industry.

The Summit will focus on the evolving heroin crisis in America, which has also been linked to the misuse of prescription medications. On March 22, President Obama announced that he will be a speaker at the Summit on Tuesday, March 29. The visit comes after he announced new public and private sector actions to address the growing heroin epidemic last year. President Obama also issued a Presidential Memorandum on training prescribers of opioids and treatment.

On March 15, 2015, the Centers for Disease Control & Prevention (CDC) issued new recommendations for prescribing opioids for chronic pain. The measure was meant to help primary care providers, the majority of which account for nearly 50% of all opioid prescriptions, provide safe and effective treatment.

During a General Session Town Hall at the summit, President Obama will address attendees.

President Obama has made clear that addressing this epidemic is a priority and requested $1.1 billion in new funding to ensure Americans who want to get treatment will be able to receive it. Most of the new funding would go directly to the States.

Nancy Halt, President/CEO for Operation UNITE and the event’s organizer, is honored that President Obama will be participating and believes his presence will focus on the nation’s attention on the drug epidemic and its effects on families and communities.

Break-out sessions will focus on the role of drug treatment courts, prevent HIV and Hepatitis C outbreaks, the use of performance enhancing drugs and ADHD amount adolescents and more. This year, the number of break-out sessions has also been expanded to include heroin-related topics.

An interactive exhibit will also allow attendees to create six-word stories, take photos and share their stories via social media.
