Levels of Care
Withdrawal is a real, medical phenomenon. When your body becomes physically dependent, suddenly stopping triggers physiological changes. We coordinate closely with partner medical detox facilities to ensure this critical first step is safe and comfortable.
The First Step
Attempting to detox alone is risky. Withdrawal from certain substances can be deeply uncomfortable or genuinely dangerous without medical oversight.
Alcohol and benzodiazepines are medically dangerous to stop abruptly. Opioids cause severe withdrawal where medical supervision dramatically increases comfort.
We use FDA-approved medications to ease withdrawal symptoms, reduce cravings, and keep you as comfortable as possible in a calm, quiet environment.
Detox takes care of the acute physical component of your condition, preparing you for residential treatment where the underlying addiction can be addressed through therapy.
Depression and anxiety are common during early detox. Addressing trauma history and mental health concerns during this phase prepares the groundwork for ongoing psychiatric care as you progress.
Medical detoxification is customized for each individual, with the duration determined by clinical assessment of the substance, usage history, and overall health.
Destination Hope coordinates seamlessly with our trusted partners, ensuring a smooth transition to our Tamarac facility for residential treatment.
Involved Healing
Family involvement during detox can be highly beneficial. During medical detox, your loved ones can learn about withdrawal, understand what you’re experiencing, and begin their own education about addiction and recovery. Family therapy often begins immediately after detox, helping rebuild trust and communication that may have been damaged by substance use.
Not all substances require medical supervision during withdrawal, but several do. Alcohol and benzodiazepines (like Xanax, Valium, and Ativan) are medically dangerous to stop abruptly and require careful medical management. Opioids (prescription painkillers and heroin) cause severe withdrawal; however, medical supervision dramatically increases comfort and success rates. Stimulants like methamphetamine and cocaine don’t typically cause medically dangerous withdrawal, but depression and anxiety can be severe.
