Why Can't They Stop? The Science Behind Addiction.

Destination Hope is excited to launch the first installment of our quarterly series "In the know." This quarterly series is designed to bring the conversation to you! We will engage with professionals and those on the front lines in the behavioral health field to provide the latest cutting edge information and education to support clients, families and professionals on a range of topics that address addiction and unaddressed mental health including the neuroscience of addiction, legal guardianship, Marchman act, understanding the treatment process and recovery management systems. We will also meet real clients and families as they navigate the challenges of living with addiction and/or unaddressed mental health.

We have seen families and clients alike on a quest to understanding the "Why" of addiction. This can be a heart wrenching journey for families, clients and even professionals at times. Understanding the role science plays in the "Why" not only opens the door for conversation about the medical model and choice in the addictive process, but most importantly, the space is created for healing and transformative recovery.

Dr. Charles Smith, our addictionologist at Destination Hope, provides patient care including detox, residential, and outpatient management of addictive diseases. He is a graduate of Marshall University and the West Virginia School of Osteopathic Medicine. Dr. Smith had completed an Addiction Medicine Fellowship at the University of Florida. We are happy to have Dr. Smith at Destination Hope as his passion and care for his patients are evident.

Get a head start. Prepare for our interactive Q & A by reading Dr. Smith's book, Understanding Addiction: Know Science, No Stigma.

Lystra Lewis, our family therapist at Destination Hope, works primarily with clients and their loved ones navigating addiction at detox, residential, and outpatient levels of care. Lystra is a graduate of Nova Southeastern. She is also a master level certified addiction professional, a licensed marriage therapist, and clinical certified trauma professional. We are happy to have Lystra serve as our family therapist at Destination Hope as her impact on clients and their families is undeniable.
