1. Make a decision
The first step of recovery from drug and alcohol abuse or addiction is to admit that you are powerless over your addiction and that your life is no longer in your control. Decide to seek treatment through a drug abuse program, you don’t need to and shouldn’t try to enter recovery alone.

2. Inpatient or Outpatient?
An inpatient or residential-style program allows you to go away from your usual surroundings and focus exclusively on your treatment; additionally, around-the-clock care is available for detox. An outpatient program allows you to maintain your employment and take care of your home while attending intensive meetings/classes.

3. Prepare for The Challenges
You will need to prepare yourself to enter treatment in whatever drug abuse program you choose. Knowing you are going to lay down your substance(s) of choice allows you to make up your mind and purpose to do it.

4. Do it

7. Aftercare
Attend the aftercare meetings recommended by your drug abuse program. This may include counseling as well as support groups and alumni gatherings.  Remember that others need to hear your story as much as you need to tell it, your recovery may be the inspiration for someone else to stay with the program!

8. 90 in 90
Attend 90 NA/AA meetings in 90 days during the first three months of your recovery. This will help you through the most critical phase of your recovery and help you set up a routine after a drug rehab program.

9. Change your playgrounds, playmates, and playthings
Do whatever is needed to change the places you spent your leisure time, the people you spent it with and the things you engaged in so as to avoid triggers to relapse.

10. A day at a time
